American Cancer Audio

Cancer doesn’t take breaks for an economic downturn. . . -Guy Fischer

Hi and thank you for joining us at EmpowHer.com, the home for women’s health online.

Since 1913, the American Cancer Society has been the nationwide health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem, preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminished suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.

Because of donations from Americans like you, the American Cancer Society has led the way in cancer research, behavioral research, intramural epidemiology and surveillance research, and there’s no cancer organization who does it better.

With home prices falling, the dollar’s value decreasing and large numbers of Americans being laid-off, how has the downturn in the economy affected the American Cancer Society’s ability to eliminate cancer?

To answer these pressing questions on the cutting edge of the nation’s cancer fight, EmpowHer is joined by Guy Fischer, the Chief Development Officer of American Cancer Society.

What are the fundraising goals for the American Cancer Society?

Everywhere I look I see signs of an economic slowdown. Guy, has the economic recession affected the American Cancer Society’s fundraising?

Traditionally, how do economic depressions affect huge power?

How can people help fundraise?

How do you explain to a potential donor why it’s important to contribute?

What support does the American Cancer Society give families?

What are the fundraising goals?

What’s the best way to contribute? Online, on the phone, via check?

Support the American Cancer Society: Visit www.Cancer.org or call 1-800-ACS-2345

Listen to the American Heart Association Interview at EmpowHer.com: http://www.empowher.com/news/2008/12/16/audio-american-heart-association-dr-robertson-talks-heart-health-and-end-year-fundra

American Heart Association

How do you advocate for your heart health?

Dr. Rose Marie Robertson, the Chief Science Officer at the American Heart Association, past-President at the American Heart Association from 2000-2001, and professor of medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center talks with Todd Hartley from EmpowHer.com, the home for women’s online health.

Sharing the American Heart Associations(AHA) heart health goals, advocating for women and their hearts, and explaining how the down economy affects the AHA, Dr. Robertson informs and enlightens in this new, insightful interview.

How your heart advocates for its health:

Did you know the first act of the heart is an act of loving self-kindness? Before the heart does anything, it takes oxygen depleted blood from the body, and pumps it to the lungs where the blood gets enriched with oxygen, then it pumps that fresh blood back to the heart, so it can feed itself before it feeds the rest of the body.

Share how you advocate for your heart health with other women at www.EmpowHer.com/share.

Questions For Dr. Robertson:

1) Dr. Robertson, why is heart disease the No. 1 killer of women?

2) Go Red For Women is dedicated to building heart disease awareness among women. How can the women listening benefit from the Go Red For Women campaign?

3) Cardiovascular disease kills approximately 460,000 women each year, which is about one every minute. This means, during our conversation, 15 to 20 women will die. . . Dr. Robertson, as the Chief Science Officer of the American Heart Association what research is being done right now on heart health?

4) More women die of cardiovascular disease than the next five causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer. Dr. Robertson, what should all women do to advocate for their hearts while in the doctor’s office?

5) Research shows that women who “Go Red” are more likely to make healthy choices. What health choices should women make and how can they become “GO RED” women?
